The mitral valve is one of the four key valves in the heart, situated between the left atrium and the left ventricle. Its primary function is to facilitate the unidirectional flow of blood; it opens to allow oxygen-rich blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle during diastole and closes during systole to prevent backflow as the ventricle contracts. The valve is named for its resemblance to a bishop's mitre (a type of headwear).

The mitral valve is composed of two flaps, or cusps: the anterior and posterior leaflets, supported by chordae tendineae that attach to papillary muscles in the ventricle. This structure helps to maintain the valve’s integrity during the heart's pumping action.

Mitral valve disorders can include mitral valve prolapse, stenosis, and regurgitation, which can lead to complications such as heart failure or arrhythmias. Diagnosis typically involves echocardiography, and treatment options can range from medication to surgical repair or replacement of the valve. Understanding the function and potential issues with the mitral valve is crucial in cardiology, as it plays a vital role in maintaining effective blood circulation in the body.
